I love this colorful interpretation of the palm trees and foliage behind the right side of Kauai’s Moloa’a Bay. The shoreline is sheltered by a wide reef that opens into small swimming areas among the relatively calm turqoise water of the bay.

THIS ARTWORK
Many of my watercolor landscapes focus on the shoreline, that this one does not is a pleasant surprise. The unique subject of this playful and technically experimental work of art is the menagerie of jewel-like blossoms and leaves that cascade into frame from the upper-right, spilling over rocks and down onto the sand. The full spectrum of color is applied in a variety of ways onto wet and/or dry paper causing some colors to set in predictable chisel-edged shapes while others bloom in diffuse whorls. Its an abstract and inventive description well suited to the florid backdrop of Anini Beach on Kauai’s North Shore.

THIS ARTWORK
This beautifully soft and tranquil image was created on March 12, 2020 from a low-slung beach chair plopped into the sand of Kauai’s North Shore relaxation destination, Anini Beach. Nowhere else on the island do the Palm, Chinese Almond, and Iron Wood trees sway so far out over crystal clear water.

THIS ARTWORK
Painted in the diffuse light of a summer afternoon full of showers, this watercolor captures the lush beauty of Kauai’s North Shore jungle-like growth. Dense with wet foliage, the roadside provided a perfect backdrop to study the swaying banana leaves, torn here and there in the breezes.

THIS ARTWORK
Moloa’a (“Mole oh ah ah”) Bay’s right side is well protected from the Pacific by a broad swath of reef that wraps the corner providing home to many beautiful aquatic creatures. Even at high tide the waters here are shallow and at low tide, like this watercolor, the reef and lava rock rise above the lapping waves and dry to a golden ochre color to beautifully compliment the blues and purples of the subsurface foundations and shadows.
